Hi guys, today i'm going to talk about Healthcare system. The chilean one to be more specific, I believe that most people are aware that the health system in Chile is inefficient and unfair.

I think that health care in chile is good, yes, but only for people who have the money to pay for it.

There is a system called FONASA, the national health fund, which is a public organism in charge of providing health care coverage. It is a good idea but with an awful implementation, I would say that the worst thing about FONASA is that it does not cover all types of illnesses, plus not covering medicines that are too expensive for a middle class person in chile, and that is what complicates the whole thing. On the other side are the ISAPRES which are better in terms of QUALITY of care, but at the same time they are more expensive because most of them attend in private institutions and clinics.

Speaking about the infrastructure and attention in public healthcare, it leaves much to be desired in those districts that are economically poor. I also feel that healthcare is very centralized in chile, the best hospitals are in Santiago, many times people from the region have to travel constantly to receive better treatment in the city.

Another thing that is important to consider, is that in terms of waiting and attention, they are very different between both, when you have FONASA you will be attended in public institutions, therefore the waiting time to receive an hour just to be attended is very long.

(Imagine those people who desperately need an hour for surgery but unfortunately do not have the money to take an hour in a private institution, they only have to wait for the public health system to eventually take them into account among thousands of people who are also in the same situation)

I do not to deviate too much from the topic, but i wanted to make a small but no less important mention to mental health , which is even more deficient, but should also be considered as important because mental health in chile especially is quite alarming and too expensive in my opinion.

I genuinely hope that this will change in a very near future, free and quality healthcare for everyone.    ✊<3

  1. Hi Monserrat, I agree with you regarding the importance of mental health in Chile. I don't remember very well where I read it, but the cases of people suffering from depression have been increasing. :(

  2. Great blog! I really appreciate You talking about mental health. It's crazy how just a couple years ago people started to actually care about it. But still it is really deficient and there is such a lack of information and accessibility about it.

  3. Hi! I also think that the best hospitals in the country are in Santiago, it´s very sad for people outside the Metropolitan Region, because it means a greater sacrifice for them.

  4. Hi, it's like in the FAU, it will be years before I get an hour with the psychologist.

  5. Hi Monserrat, I agree with your point of view about this issue. The only way to get good health attention in Chile is paying a lot of money for it, it is a little bit of comfortableness, but it is true.
